That said, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was no slouch when it launched in late 2020 and continues to impress new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in the Galaxy S22 Ultra is two generations ahead of the Snapdragon 865+ found in the Note. The 3GHz primary core gives it plenty of horsepower, while the 4nm node makes for a much more efficient device. Aside from Qualcomm's new chip, Samsung also outfits the device with the new Exynos 2200, which also builds on a 4nm process while paired with an AMD-powered GPU for improved gaming performance. While this is the same size as the Note 20 Ultra, Samsung brings some new capabilities to the sensor to improve its output. Both phones capture 12MP nona-binned images, which combines nine pixels into one for improved light capture, but the S22 Ultra adds an extra ingredient to the concoction with Adaptive Pixel. This captures both a full 108MP image and a 12MP image, combining to bring both improved detail and light. Samsung also touts its Nightography, which brings low-light photos to S22 Ultra brings a much more capable and versatile camera array with two telephoto lenses at 3x and phones are outfitted with built-in S Pens, which is the main draw. The stylus brings more functionality to the smartphone for productives and artists and even works as a handy Bluetooth remote for taking images and other functions. The S Pen on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was already impressive thanks to its low 9ms latency. However, Samsung has pushed the envelope even further with the S22 Ultra, bringing the latency down to just which makes it feel like you're writing on paper. While the newer S22 Ultra features some of the latest display, camera, and chipset advancements, there are also some downgrades when compared to the Note 20 Ultra, making for a confusing you get a more powerful chipset found on many of the best Android phones of 2022, but the tradeoff here is that the base model S22 Ultra only comes with 8GB of RAM as opposed to 12GB on the base Note 20 Ultra. And you'll have to fork over more dough if you want that 12GB variant, which is a tough pill to swallow given the already expensive price tag. And unlike the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the S22 doesn't reach the 16GB max, only topping out at 12GB of said, this may not be a big deal for some. In fact, our Jerry Hildenbrand notes that more RAM isn't really necessary, although it's nice to have. If it weren't for the rear camera design, you'd think these were the same phone. As far as performance and camera quality, they also are pretty much on par, given the age of the Note 20 Ultra and certain hardware tradeoffs with the S22 Ultra. That said, with the S22, you get the added benefit of four OS upgrades and five years of security updates, meaning you may be holding onto this phone for a long time. The Note 20 Ultra is promised three OS upgrades, which means Android 13 may be its final S22 Ultra isn't cheap, landing in at $1,200, though there are plenty of promotions and deals that can help lower that price to make it more affordable. If you do opt for the S22 Ultra, make sure that you're protecting your investment with a quality screen protector and phone case!If you're looking to upgrade from the Note 20 Ultra, we might recommend it, depending on your needs. Those looking to purchase a new phone may prefer the S22 Ultra simply because it's newer and gives you the latest and greatest that Samsung has to offer for 2022. That last one makes us laugh out loud every time, for some actually took this matte finish approach from the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, dropping the shiny finish of the Galaxy S20 series into the bargain. It was a smart Galaxy S21 Ultra Image credit FutureThe Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was arguably the best-looking smartphone of 2020, particularly in its Mystic Bronze guise, which was arguably the most beautiful gold-ish tone we’d seen at the time. You could also get it in Mystic Black or Mystic White if you were Galaxy S21 Ultra is a rounder, smoother device than the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The corners curve off, whereas they finish at a flat-topped point on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. We love unique and striking is the way the two phones address the problem’ of having a prominent camera module. As we’ll discuss, both phones have seriously meaty camera systems, but both wear these proudly as the Galaxy S21 Ultra, that means a dramatic swoop that seems to flow out of the aluminum frame itself, before dropping off abruptly along its inner edges. On the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, it means an audaciously vertical camera mount, with no attempt to smooth or break up its thick metal might surprise you to learn that the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the smaller phone of the two in most ways. There isn’t an awful lot in it, but at x x and 208g it’s a smidgen shorter, a fair bit thinner, and quite a lot lighter than the Galaxy S21 x x and 228g, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra isn’t what you’d call unwieldy, but ultimately, this gives the slightest of edges to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on the design Galaxy S21 Ultra Image credit FutureThese are two of the best smartphone displays you can find on any smartphone. The Note 20 Ultra screen is slightly bigger at inches, though the Galaxy S21 Ultra isn’t far behind at inches. Both screens are huge, two-handed the Galaxy S21 Ultra has one distinct advantage over the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra it’s the first Samsung phone capable of running at a 120Hz refresh rate and at a Quad HD resolution at the same previous phones – including the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and even the rest of the Galaxy S21 family – forced you to choose one or the other. We’re glad to have both available in the same package, and it’s really not before time. Phones like the OnePlus 8 Pro were doing this in early the difference between QHD and FHD in smartphone displays isn’t as noticeable as you might think. Unless you’re pixel-peeping in Google Photos, watching a beautifully shot native 2K video stream, or using mobile VR remember that?, you might struggle to perceive a meaningful more consequential is the availability of 120Hz, which both phones have. With this active, the display refreshes twice as fast as on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Both of these Samsung displays can smartly scale from 10Hz up to 120Hz depending on what you’re doing on your phone, thus saving battery life when fluid on-screen motion isn’t key is the sheer quality of Samsung’s AMOLED display technology. Samsung is the undisputed champ at this stuff, with its screens able to output vibrant, natural colors and deep both displays can hit a peak brightness of 1,500 nits, however, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has been shown to go slightly brighter on average. It takes home the win in this category, but we’re talking varying degrees of fabulous Galaxy S21 Ultra Image credit FutureSamsung has upped its camera game significantly in recent years, and that’s most apparent with these two phones. They’re multi-eyed monsters. Both are led by standard’ wide-angle cameras with 1/ 108MP wide sensors and fast f/ apertures. In both cases these use 9-in-1 pixel binning techniques to render sharp, well-lit shots in a range of lighting phones also have identically sized 12MP f/ ultrawide cameras for those 120-degree landscape shots. They also both benefit from laser-assisted phase-detection autofocus, which helps them lock onto their subjects way better than the problematic Galaxy S20 when we consider the telephoto offerings of these two phones that things start to differ. The Galaxy S21 Ultra has an extra camera, for one thing, in the shape of a dedicated 10MP f/ 70mm telephoto phones have periscope telephoto sensors for optically zoomed shots, but while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra goes with a 12MP f/ 120mm unit for a 5x optical zoom and 50x hybrid zoom, the Galaxy S21 Ultra goes longer with a 10MP f/ 240mm for 10x zoomed shots and a 100x hybrid to say, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the camera to turn to if you want relatively crisp zoomed-in shots. Neither phone is a slouch in this department, but the newer phone definitely picks out distant details better, and it’ll also lock the viewfinder so that your preview doesn’t lurch around on extreme in normal shooting with those similar 108MP sensors, however, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has an advantage, rendering generally brighter shots with superior dynamic range. Its night-time performance has also been improved, which is an area where Samsung has tended to lag behind its closest phones can shoot 8K video at 24fps, but you’re more likely to use their 4K 60fps modes. The Galaxy S21 Ultra can shoot this across all five of its cameras, including the selfie cam. The new Director’s View mode helps facilitate this, and is a godsend for budding of selfie cameras, the Galaxy S21 Ultra outstrips its older brother with a whopping 40MP sensor, whereas the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra can only muster and performance Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Image credit Aakash JhaveriWhile just five months separate these two phones, they straddle a clear generational divide, and this is most obvious when you consider the processors that power the Galaxy S20 Note Ultra runs on either the Snapdragon 865 or the Exynos 990, the Galaxy S21 Ultra packs the new Snapdragon 888 or the Exynos 2100. In both cases, it’s a year-on-year tests will show a modest performance bump for the newer chips, and processor-intensive tasks like transcoding a 4K video clip will take a touch less time on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. But you won’t really notice the difference in day-to-day usage, or even when playing high-end 3D games. Both phones are very fast, and will remain so for years to and if you’re wondering what’s with the multiple chips, that’s just a unique read deeply annoying quirk of Samsung’s approach to hardware. It splits the processor provision for its flagship phones between itself and divide runs along regional lines, with US and China customers getting Qualcomm chips and the rest of the world getting Samsung’s. The trouble is, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are invariably a little faster and more efficient than Samsung’s Exynos of the Exynos-powered Galaxy S21 Ultra aren’t losing out by much in this regard, because the difference between the two regional models is narrower than ever. And, as mentioned, in all cases the differences are Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Note 20 Ultra pack a capacious 12GB of RAM, too, which is more than enough for any tasks you can throw at them. The top 512GB model of the Galaxy S21 Ultra takes things even further with an indulgent 16GB, which is double what most rival Android flagships from there being a 4G Galaxy Note 20 Ultra available in Australia, these are two firmly 5G-ready phones, so they’re both able to take advantage of cutting-edge mobile network speeds where from those internal specifications, the key spec that separates the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra from the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the S Pen. Samsung’s signature stylus is housed neatly within the body of the Note 20 Ultra, and it opens up a whole bunch of cool features via the company’s comprehensive can whip out your phone and scrawl on the screen without waking it when you want to take a quick note. Or you can open Samsung’s powerful Notes app and have your handwritten musings transcribed into digital text. Budding artists, meanwhile, can compose surprisingly nuanced pictures thanks to the S Pen’s refined handling and analogue pressure inclusion of the S Pen would typically help keep the Note relevant for a full year at least, even with the arrival of a new Galaxy S, but this year, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has gained S Pen compatibility – buy yourself an S Pen it’s not included with the S21 Ultra, and you’ll be able to get a very similar Note’ not an identical experience, though. In addition to the fact that you have to purchase the stylus separately, there’s nowhere to house it, so you’ll need to buy a bulky case to clip this larger and admittedly more comfortable variant to. Given that the Galaxy S21 Ultra is already a little tubby, adding weight is far from there isn’t feature parity between these two S Pens, with the Galaxy S21 Ultra variant missing out on the Bluetooth shortcuts for triggering the camera and other lifeThe key reason why the Galaxy S21 Ultra is bigger and heavier than the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is because it has a much bigger the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 4500mAh power pack, the Galaxy S21 Ultra cranks things up to 5000mAh. It also has a more efficient processor, which bodes well for course, the newer phone needs this leg-up if it’s to run at QHD and 120Hz; there’s a reason Samsung didn’t feel confident about activating this dual mode described the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s battery life as “solid” in our review. On a typical day of moderate use, we were able to get through a full day without the phone giving out if we stuck to the default 1080p/120Hz settings. When we cranked it up to full QHD/120Hz, however, the battery dropped noticeably QHD/120Hz combo isn’t an issue for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and we got similar all-day performance from its standard FHD/120Hz mode. We would tend to average 20% left in the tank at the end of the day, and those were days filled with taking photos and videos, and watching YouTube on the large users should be happy with either phone, but you might still want to carry a charger with you on extended days out. The addition of 120Hz and 5G has definitely come at a cost to phones support up to 25W wired charging, which is a little disappointing given that some of Samsung’s rivals have upped their charging tech to 65W. Both phones also support 15W wireless charging, as well as reverse wireless Galaxy S21 Ultra Image credit FutureGiven Samsung’s two-pronged approach to its premium smartphone offering, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra sit alongside one another as the brand’s current flagship to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s impressive design, specs, and performance, it continues to feel fit for purpose as we write this comparison article, seven months after its launch. But the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is a real statement of newer phone seems to have been explicitly designed to overshadow its immediate predecessor, with superior performance, a heftier design, a display that’s almost as big, and an improved camera – and it even steals the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s signature trick by supporting the S doesn’t mean you should write off the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra though. Its design and S Pen integration are more elegant, and its all-round performance remains competitive. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the better phone overall, but having seen a price drop since that phone launched, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra may just be the better buy. That isn't to say that the Note 20 Ultra doesn't have its own unique features. If you're looking to buy a flagship in 2021, here's how the two phones measure S21 Ultra vs. Galaxy Note 20 Ultra The next-gen upgrade is hereThe S21 Ultra has the potential to be among the best Android phones in 2021. It's clear that Samsung has reserved its latest innovations for the device, and in doing so created what is possibly the most powerful flagship we'll see this S21 Ultra is packed with new innovations, giving it an edge over its Note start with the hardware The S21 Ultra is one of the first phones to be powered by Qualcomm's beastly new Snapdragon 888 chipset. The flagship chipset features the new Cortex X1 core and brings significant performance gains over the Snapdragon 865 that powered last year's S20 there's the display. Samsung continues to push the boundaries in this area year after year, with the S21 Ultra featuring a Dynamic AMOLED panel with QHD+ resolution. The big deal with the screen is that it has dynamic refresh rate technology that allows it to scale from 11Hz all the way up to 120Hz. Just be sure you keep it safe with a great screen protector and one of the best Galaxy S21 Ultra cases! Now, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also has a 120Hz AMOLED screen, but it misses out on dynamic the biggest addition this year is the S Pen. While the stylus isn't bundled with the phone itself, you'll be able to pick it up additionally and use it with Samsung's 2021 flagship. That means the stylus is no longer exclusive to the Note series, so if you're a fan of Samsung's stylus, you'll want to take a look at the S21 also refreshed its design, and the result is that the S21 Ultra stands out against its predecessors. There are similarities in the overall aesthetic, but the new camera housing is quite striking. But when it comes to the design, the Note 20 Ultra has a clear edge thanks to its gorgeous Mystic Bronze color Apoorva Bhardwaj / Android Central Image credit Source Apoorva Bhardwaj / Android CentralI did not like the Note 20 Ultra when I got started with it nearly six months ago, but I ended up using the phone more than any other device in 2020. I used most flagships released in the last 12 months, but went back to the Note 20 Ultra after all the reviews because of that massive screen and powerful Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has plenty to offer, but the S21 Ultra takes things to the next phone picked up the One UI update at the end of December, and the switch to Android 11 puts it on par with the S21 Ultra in terms of the software. Of course, the S21 Ultra is launching with Android 11 out of the box, so it will receive one additional Android version devices will get three guaranteed Android updates and three years of security patches, and with One UI Samsung has a user interface that's one of the best you'll find on regular Galaxy S21 models come with 8GB of RAM as standard, but the S21 Ultra features 12GB of RAM out of the box on all versions. That's the case with the Note 20 Ultra as well, with the phone packing 12GB of RAM and available in three storage versions 128GB, 256GB, and is also offering the S21 Ultra in these same storage sizes, but the 512GB edition will feature an insane 16GB of RAM — just like last year's S20 Ultra. Whether you actually need that much RAM is the more relevant question, but at least you shouldn't see any issues with lack of a microSD card on the S10 Ultra is a divisive for the rest of the hardware, the Note 20 Ultra has everything you care about IP68 dust and water resistance, 15W wireless charging as well as reverse wireless charging, and 25W wired charging. The S21 Ultra also has these features, and it picks up Wi-Fi 6E connectivity the Note 20 has Wi-Fi 6 as well as ultra the S21 Ultra has all the hardware you could ask for, it is missing one core feature that has been a mainstay on Samsung phones a microSD card. The 256GB model costs $1,249 and the 512GB version $1, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has just two storage options. The 512GB version jumps up to $1,449, but it appears to be out of stock at most retailers and carriers. Galaxy S21 Ultra vs Galaxy Note 20 Ultra DesignImage credit Tom's GuideNewer doesn't always mean better. I prefer the design the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra over the Galaxy S21 Ultra. That's because the Note 20 Ultra is thinner, lighter and smaller. The camera bump on the S21 Ultra does integrate better into the back of the phone with Samsung's contour design, but I'd rather hold and use the Note 20 Ultra. The S21 Ultra also comes in more colors, including Phantom Silver and Phantom Black, plus Phantom Navy, Phantom Titanium and Phantom Brown through The Note 20 Ultra comes in just Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black, Mystic White. If you want to use an S Pen, the Note 20 Ultra is the obvious choice, because there's nowhere to put the S Pen on the S21 Ultra unless you spring for a case. And that adds even more bulk to a hefty device. Galaxy S21 Ultra vs Galaxy Note 20 Ultra DisplayImage credit Tom's GuideThe displays on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra are fairly similar, with both phones featuring Dynamic AMOLED displays that can scale from 10Hz up to 120Hz for smoother performance. The Note 20 Ultra's screen is only slightly larger at inches, compared to inches for the S21 Ultra. Image credit FutureBoth of these screens are sharp and amazingly colorful with ultra-wide viewing angles, but the S21 Ultra pulls ahead with its higher average brightness of 821 nits. The Note 20 Ultra hit 662 nits in our lab. Image credit FutureHowever, the Note 20 Ultra's screen was slightly more colorful, registering of the DCI-P3 color gamut, compared to for the S21 Ultra. The Note 21 Ultra's panel also proved a bit more accurate, as it achieved a Delta-E score of 0 is perfect; the S21 Ultra scored Galaxy S21 Ultra vs Galaxy Note 20 Ultra CamerasImage credit Tom's GuideThe Galaxy S21 Ultra is the camera you want if you're looking for the most powerful zoom. It packs two telephoto zoom lenses, which can achieve 3x hybrid zoom and 10x optical and up to 100x digital Space the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is no slouch in this department, as it features a 5x optical zoom and 30x Space Zoom, but it simply doesn't go as far. In addition, the S21 Ultra has a zoom lock feature that can help capture steadier the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra feature a super sharp main 108MP camera, as well as a 12MP ultrawide camera. However, the S21 Ultra is designed to offer better performance in low light, and it also delivers improvements with its portrait mode. The Galaxy S21 Ultra also sports a sharper front camera at 40MP, compared to 10MP for the Note 20 Ultra. When it comes to image quality, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is better in almost every way. With this bowl a fruit, the S21 Ultra produces a brighter image, so the oranges in particular look more vibrant. The apple in the S21 Ultra shot is almost too bright, as you lose some definition in the skin compared to the Note 20 Ultra, but overall the S21 Ultra produces a more pleasing photo. I used the Night mode on both phones for this photo, which illuminated only by a nearby street lamp. It's not a dramatic difference, but I do appreciate that the sky appears brighter and the tree to the right looks a bit sharper and has more contrast in the foreground. Both phones do a fairly good job overall, though, especially with the footsteps in the snow. In this photo of a small lucky bamboo plant, I actually prefer the Note 20 Ultra's photo because of the way it deals with the light streaming through the window. The bright points at the top of the leaves make the shot look more compelling. The S21 Ultra's pic is too uniform throughout. This is where the Note 20 Ultra really starts to fall behind. This portrait looks completely blown out compared to the S21 Ultra. It looks like there's a white haze or film over the whole scene. Whereas the S21 Ultra does a better job capturing a more accurate dark blue in my jacket; my face also has a warmer tone than in the Note's shot. At 10x zoom, the Galaxy S21 Ultra delivers more detail and more accurate hues in this shot of a tree with some bird and squirrel feeders. The Note 20 Ultra struggles with the bark and the feeder in the top left of the frame gets almost completely lost along the edges. Once we get to 50x zoom, it's no contest. The Note 20 Ultra's photo is so blurry and hazy it looks like an impressionist painting. The bark and feeder both look a lot clearer in the S21 Ultra photo. Galaxy S21 Ultra vs Galaxy Note 20 Ultra PerformanceImage credit FutureThe Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra packs a newer Snapdragon 888 processor, while the Note 20 Ultra is powered by a Snapdragon 865 chip, so it's not a big surprise that the S21 Ultra offers better performance. But it's not a huge example, on our video editing test, which involves transcoding a 4K video clip to 1080p using the Adobe Premiere Rush app, the Galaxy S21 Ultra took 1 minute and 2 seconds to complete the task. The Note 20 Ultra needed a little bit longer at 1 Geekbench 5, which measures overall performance, the S21 Ultra scored 3,400 on the multi-core portion of the test, compared to 3,294 for the Note 20 the Galaxy S21 Ultra may be the better option for gamers, as it scored considerably higher on the 3DMark Wild Life graphics test. It notched an average of 33 frames per second, while the Note 20 Ultra mustered only S21 Ultra vs Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Battery lifeImage credit FutureBoth the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will get you through a full day on a charge, especially if you use the 60Hz display mode on each phone. But the S21 Ultra has longer endurance the Tom's Guide battery test, which consists of continuous web surfing over 5G on 150 nits of screen brightness, the Galaxy S21 Ultra lasted an impressive 11 hours and 25 minutes in 60Hz screen mode. That's good enough to land this device on our best phone battery life list. With the display's adaptive mode on, which goes up to 120Hz, the runtime dropped to a still-good 10 Galaxy Note 20 Ultra didn't fare as well in our testing, as it lasted 1026 in 60Hz screen mode and 759 with the adaptive mode turned on. That's a pretty big S21 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra both offer fast 25W charging, but only the Note comes with a charger in the box. Galaxy S21 Ultra vs Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Special featuresImage credit Tom's GuideThe most special thing about the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is its S Pen, but now that the Galaxy S21 Ultra supports S Pen input, what's the difference? For one, you have to buy the S Pen separately with the S21 Ultra. A combo case and S Pen costs $ Plus, this case adds bulk to an already hefty phone, and the S Pen doesn't support Bluetooth. A separate S Pen Pro will be coming Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the phone to get if you want to expand storage, as it offers a microSD card slot. Samsung got rid of this perk on the S21 Ultra along with a bundled S21 Ultra does have some welcome special features, such as its more powerful Space Zoom and zoom lock feature. In addition, there's a handy object eraser feature in the camera software and a Director's View feature on the S21 Ultra when recording video, which allows you to record using the front and back cameras at the same time. Galaxy S21 Ultra vs. Galaxy Note 20 Ultra What about the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy S22 Ultra?Even though this face-off pits the Galaxy S21 Ultra against the Note 20 Ultra, the latter is over a year old. So what about its successor? I wouldn't hold out for a Note 21 this year because it seems like Samsung has canned the Note series indefinitely. Instead, you'll probably want to look to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 for your big phone needs. It has S Pen support, though it requires external storage like the S21 Ultra does. It's still a big, powerful phone and perfect for people all-in on foldables. It's not cheap, however, and it certainly doesn't soften the blow for Note least the Galaxy Note series went out with a rumors abound about the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which may be the most Note-like Galaxy S phone yet. From the familiar design to the built-in S Pen, it looks like Samsung might have realized its mistake in laying the Note line to rest. It offers a brighter display, longer battery life and especially better cameras. The image quality difference is pretty stark, especially when taking portraits and zooming in outdoors. If you want to use an S Pen with your next phone, I would recommend the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra instead. Yes, the Galaxy S21 Ultra supports the S Pen, but I would rather have it built in to the phone without needing a bulky case. Overall, though, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is the better value. The Note 20 sports a rectangular shape with sharp corners, and it runs wider than the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which looks a bit more chunky but has a narrower form factor and rounded corners. The S21 Ultra has an inherent advantage as the newer unit, with the highest brightness up to 1,500 nits for optimal viewing and better color rendering in direct sunlight. Both devices support QHD resolution for sharp detail, but the Note cannot use the 120Hz Dynamic fast refresh rate at the maximum resolution, while the S21 Ultra can. That said, the 120Hz refresh rate is dynamic on both models, so it only appears if needed, while the rest of the time the phones run at a lower refresh rate to conserve battery life. The S21 Ultra’s updated camera styling is sophisticated and elegant as Samsung’s new design now integrates the camera pod right into the frame for a more natural look — a double-edged sword, as Boxall points out, because the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra does not wear its heft as well as the Note 20 Ultra or much of the competition. The issue stems from the S21 Ultra’s standout feature — the camera module. While the Note’s camera module is huge and protruding despite its elegant design, the integrated design of the S21 Ultra throws the device off balance. While competition is steep, and so much depends on your taste, the Galaxy S21 Ultra still edges out the Note 20 Ultra by a thin hair. Winner Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Performance, battery life, and charging Andrew Martonik/Digital Trends Newer phones nearly always take the performance advantage, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which ships with the new Snapdragon 888, promises to deliver superior performance compared to the older Snapdragon 865+ on the Note 20 Ultra. Another advantage is the newer 5nm manufacturing process used to build the newer phone facilitates more transistors and better performance without power consumption taking a commensurate hit. While both phones have a base storage of 128GB, only the Note 20 Ultra has a MicroSD card slot, something that the S21 Ultra surprisingly does not. To compensate, the S21 Ultra offers models with 256GB or 512GB of native storage. Both phones support all current 5G bands including mmWave or UWB on Verizon, but the S21 Ultra has a 5G modem built into the chip, which also conserves power and boosts data speed. The S21 Ultra also comes with a larger 5,000mAh battery, compared to a 4,500mAh battery on the Note 20 Ultra, a considerable upgrade that makes a big difference in everyday use, though the Galaxy S21 Ultra supports 25W charging speeds, the same as the Note 20 Ultra. But on the plus side for the Note 20 Ultra, it still ships with a charger in the box. Both phones support wireless charging at speeds of up to 15 watts, and both support reverse wireless charging to act as a power bank for a smartwatch or earbuds. Because the superior chipset delivers better performance, and almost everything else is comparable except for the MicroSD card slot, and despite the charger as an add-on expense for some, we give the nod to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Winner Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Cameras Andrew Martonik/Digital Trends Samsung did a lot of work on the S21 Ultra’s camera. For starters, the S21 Ultra revisits the 100x zoom, which it had previously reduced to 50x for the Note 20. It debuted a new 10x zoom native periscope lens, the longest zoom ever for a Galaxy phone, and it uses this camera combined with an intelligent digital zoom to reach 100x. Samsung also includes a 3x zoom telephoto lens with both telephoto cameras offering critical optical image stabilization. These features make the S21 Ultra a superior zoom camera. The result, says Boxall, is superlative. He describes massive detail in the photos, which look crisp, sharp, colorful, and well-balanced. There are also improvements to video recording. It now supports a laser auto-focusing system to improve focus. It enables 8K video recording at 30 fps, and can capture high-quality screen grabs from that footage. While not discounting the quality and styling of the Note 20 Ultra camera, at the end of the day, it is less flexible and powerful than the newer phone. Winner Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Software and updates Andy Boxall/Digital Trends Both the Galaxy S21 and the Galaxy Note 20 now run One UI Samsung’s skin for Android 11, so they have nearly identical software and features. They’re also likely to get updates at roughly the same rate, and while the S21 Ultra will probably get one more version of Android, that’s a while away. Winner Tie Special features Andrew Martonik/Digital Trends Here’s a new one For the first time, an S series phone supports the S Pen, though not as naturally as on the Note 20 Ultra, which not only ships with the pen but has its own slot for the pen. While the pen is kind of a novelty for the S21 Ultra, it’s an add-on that requires a separate purchase and a special case. It’s unclear what the demand is for the pen for this model, but it’s nice to have the option — though if you do want one, you’ll have to shell out even more money. But even if you do, Boxall points out that the phone does not support the Bluetooth function of the Note 20 Ultra’s S Pen and there are no features, like the remote shutter release. There’s also nowhere to stow the S Pen when it’s not in use, except to separately purchase an ugly case for the S21 Ultra to hold the S Pen. Conversely, the best part about the Note 20 Ultra line is that every phone comes with the same stylus, so it’s easier to find a way to integrate it into everyday use. However, there are other things the S21 Ultra does not ship with, such as a MicroSD card slot and the charger — both of which the Note 20 Ultra does have. Both the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Note 20 Ultra support both main 5G bands in almost all the territories where they are sold. The S21 adds a couple of smaller new items like the camera’s Vlogger View, which allows you to capture video with both front and rear cameras simultaneously, and the Director View, offering thumbnails of the feed from the S21’s different camera lens. With a free, built-in S Pen, in-box charger, and MicroSD card slot, the Note 20 Ultra comes with pretty much everything the Galaxy S21 Ultra does and a little extra. It’s the winner here. Winner Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Price and availability The world has emerged from one sad, unstable year and entered into another, so price variations matter. For 2021, Samsung dropped its flagship phone price by $200 — though again, it did remove the charger from the box. The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G rings in at $1,200 for 128GB model, $1,250 for 256GB, and $1,380 for 512GB, and available now. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G retails for $1,300 for 128GB, but discounts are available from some retailers that may make the price more competitive. Because prices are roughly comparable, while at the same time the S21 Ultra starts at a lower price and offers several options based on your storage needs, but forces optional purchases, we call a tie. Winner Tie Overall winner Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra It’s still early days for the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, but our reviewer has some encouraging words, judging it to be the most advanced Android smartphone available and makes excellent use of its high-level tech. The Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra have many features and capabilities in common, and given that you may be able to obtain the more expensive model at roughly the same price as the new one, which is better is a matter of personal preference. Boxall acknowledges the similarities and relative advantages of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra — that despite its slightly older processor and somewhat less capable camera, it’s slimmer and better balanced, plus it comes with the S Pen stylus with somewhere to keep it. Plus, it’s quite a bit cheaper than the S21 Ultra. In choosing the Galaxy S21 Ultra as the better phone, we base the decision on the updated processor, brighter display, superior camera power and design, and more powerful battery, so if it’s the best overall phone you want, then choose the new S21 Ultra. Released at the end of August in 2020, the phone received our coveted Editor’s Choice award at the time but has since been largely passed by the excellent Galaxy S21 Ultra. Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends Should it be forgotten this way? I’ve been using the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra for a week and can confidently say it’s still an excellent smartphone in all but one, rather important, area. It’s a big deal, and along with the shadow of the S21 Ultra hanging over it, means not even the Note 20 Ultra’s many positive points can make it an absolute must-buy today, a shock when it’s barely a year into its life. No longer too big? Let’s go through what makes the Note 20 Ultra such a good smartphone first, and the list is long and extensive. It’s beautifully made, the finish has proven hardwearing, and the Mystic Bronze color is still really eye-catching. I like the squared-off, massive camera module design too. It has aged very well. I remember that for the first few weeks of using the Note 20 Ultra in 2020, it took me a while to adjust to the overall size of the phone. I noted in my review how I missed a smaller, more manageably sized phone for quick tasks. The proliferation of phones with massive screens released since then has dulled the Note 20 Ultra’s size. This time around, it hasn’t felt too big at all, except when it’s in my pocket. Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends Don’t misunderstand me, the Note 20 Ultra is still big and heavy, has a slight balance bias towards the top, and will stretch the pocket of your jeans. But what it’s not out of sync with other phones in its category. Forget the S21 Ultra too, you can put it alongside the Galaxy S21+ and find it’s not all that different. Obviously, the phone hasn’t gotten smaller, but the phones around it have certainly gotten bigger. The net result is the Note 20 Ultra no longer feels like an outsider, but rather just more “standard” at least among flagship phones. Phones weighing around 200 grams or more are commonplace, helping to make the Note 20 Ultra’s 208-gram weight feel “normal” when comparing it to the competition. Galaxy Note 20 Ultra left and Galaxy S21+ right Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends One thing to note is the unusual rattle you may hear on the Note 20 Ultra. It’s distracting and makes it sound like something is broken inside the expensive phone, but according to Samsung it is not supposed to be a fault or a concern and is apparently caused by the camera’s auto-focus system. Having used the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on-and-off for nearly a year, the rattle remains but has not gotten worse or affected the camera’s operation. Software and the stylus My Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has Android 11 with Samsung’s One UI installed, along with Google’s July Android Security Patch. It is all smooth, fast, and has been completely reliable. Compared to a Galaxy S21+, which has the same software, there are still a few differences, one of which I find frustrating. Swipe right on the home screen on the Galaxy S21+ and you can view either Google Discover or the Samsung Free feed. On the Note 20 Ultra, it’s fixed to Samsung Free with no option to switch. Samsung Free uses Upday as its news aggregator, which is a collection of news story links which when tapped only take you to another short, one-sentence overview of the story, forcing you to tap another link to go to the full piece. It’s littered with ads at each stage. Google Discover is more informative, less annoying, and if you regularly use Google’s services, better tailored to your preferences and effective at highlighting stories you may enjoy. Why this isn’t available on the Note 20 Ultra is a mystery. I’m not an artist or a prolific note-taker, so I don’t exploit the S Pen stylus’s abilities in either of these areas, but I do find it useful as a remote shutter release for the camera. It works for both stills and video, and it allows you not only to adopt more natural positions when taking selfies but also to shoot video that needs less editing. It’s really helpful. I like the translation feature too, where hovering over text translates it to your chosen language. Although the translations are sometimes wobbly, it’s better than nothing and far quicker than copying and pasting the text into Google Translate or Papago. Photos and security The camera continues to be one of Samsung’s best. It doesn’t beat the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but its versatility — main, wide, and telephoto cameras — means it’s just as usable in everyday situations. Consistency between the main and wide-angle cameras is where it suffers most, with differences in exposure and dynamic range being immediately obvious. Focusing can also be problematic, and you need to force the camera to focus on your intended area when getting in close to a subject or make do with a tight central focus. These points are not unique to the Note 20 Ultra’s camera and don’t spoil it in any meaningful way. It may not be Samsung’s camera superstar, but it comes very close, easily competing with phones like the OnePlus 9 Pro and the Oppo Find X3 Pro. I still think Single Take mode, which uses a quick video to create a selection of stills and sharable short video clips is enjoyable to use, and much more useful than most added features we get on cameras today. My time with the Note 20 Ultra has been largely very positive, apart from one thing security. It was bad in 2020, and it’s even worse now. The fingerprint sensor is so unreliable that I turned it off, and this is a really bad thing to have to do. Face unlock is ready as a backup, but is also slow, and only recognizes my face every three or four goes. Every other time I have to use my PIN code to unlock the Note 20 Ultra. Considering the cost of the phone, this isn’t acceptable. The hateful fingerprint sensor’s problem is mostly hardware-based — it uses an old sensor compared to the vastly improved newer version on the Galaxy S21 Ultra — and if any software improvements have been sent through to get it working better, I haven’t noticed them. Worth buying in 2021? If the security system worked as it should on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, it would be a no-caveat recommendation to buy today, but it doesn’t. It really lets an otherwise excellent phone down. The Note 20 Ultra is still the best phone to use with a stylus, for example, as even though the experience is similar on the S21 Ultra, there’s nowhere to keep the pen when you’re not using it unless you choose a chunky, ugly case. Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends It’s running the latest software and has received regular updates too, which is also something that will continue for a few years. The screen is fantastic, it’s no longer the in-hand monster it was almost a year ago comparatively, at least, and the camera keeps up with most newer phones. I love the classy look, and the way it feels like a truly expensive piece of tech. It’s high quality all the way, if you ignore the fingerprint sensor, on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. I like the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra a lot, but Samsung is making it very hard to recommend buying today, due to its aggressive Galaxy S21 Ultra pricing. The 128GB Galaxy Note 20 Ultra costs $1,200, which is the same retail price as the 128GB Galaxy S21 Ultra. At the time of writing, Samsung will charge you $1,000 for the 128GB S21 Ultra, or $1,050 for the 256GB model. It’s both cheaper and better than the Note 20 Ultra. The case for buying the Note 20 Ultra in 2021 is hard to make, unless you’re absolutely set on having the S Pen with you at all times, and is mostly down to the poor performance of a very important piece of hardware, the fingerprint sensor, and Samsung charging less for a newer, superior smartphone. We really don’t need a new Galaxy Note phone this year, but a Note 20 Ultra FE would be very welcome, with only a change to the fingerprint sensor needed to make it an absolute winner.
This teardown is not a repair guide. To repair your Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, use our service manual. The spec sheet for this phone looks very ultra—but is it more ultra than last year's model? Or is it basically an S20 Ultra in a mask? Judge for yourself Quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O Display 3200x1440, 515ppi, variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz Snapdragon 888 processor paired with 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM 16 GB optional 128 GB flash storage 256 or 512 GB optional 5,000 mAh battery Five cameras 12 MP ƒ/ ultra-wide; 108 MP ƒ/ wide-angle; 10 MP ƒ/ telephoto; 10 MP ƒ/ periscope telephoto, and a 40 MP ƒ/ selfie camera If you read our S20 Ultra teardown and think you're seeing double, you're not alone. But let's dig a little deeper to see if more than just the numbers line up. Before we dismantle the phone, we first dismantle the box and accessories. Obviously, there's a cable and a wall charg— Wait ... you're telling us there's no charger in the box? Didn't Samsung mock Apple for doing this very thing last year? Oh, right—Samsung deleted that too. All kidding aside, it's not a surprising about-face from Samsung—and it's a small step in the right direction for reducing e-waste. Design-wise, this year's Galaxy S-series sports a less-rounded edge although it's not as dramatic a flattening as Apple gave the iPhone. Meanwhile, the camera bump has spread all the way to the Ultra's aluminum edge, creating a smooth transition for the eyes and fingers. Camera bumps may be here to stay, but expandable storage has gone the way of the dodo—the microSD tray is missing in the S21 series. One thing we really love about the new design The matte finish on the glass rear panel. It doesn't feel much like glass, but packs a rather premium plasticky feel, if you're into that. Before we bust out the tools, let's put on our Ultra-vision goggles and get a glimpse inside, courtesy of our friends at Creative Electron. What fun stuff can we find, compared to the S20 Ultra's X-ray shot? The vibration motor and the SIM card tray have traded places at either end of the phone. This seemingly makes room for a slightly larger earpiece speaker. The periscope telephoto camera is also noticeably larger, likely for extra optical zoom levels. Lastly, the wireless charging coils got a minor makeover. The outer charging coils are thinner, elongated, and got a few extra windings. This may help with better efficiency over a bigger charging area. The inner coils now have a two-gauge setup—the fine gauge windings might help charge smaller items like Galaxy Buds more efficiently. Like a terrible or genius? physician, we take one glance and immediately prescribe a dose of heat and slicing to get the rear panel off. We've got patients to see! Perhaps doubling the dosage of iOpeners will make our job easier? We might need more trials before approving this for wider use. After the heat treatment, it's time to make our incisions around the perimeter. The new camera bump's contours make this procedure trickier. We worked out a lateral pick maneuver, but it still required more patience than we'd like. Operation successful! The rear panel comes off without any stray cables attached to it. The same large adhesive gasket holds both the back cover and camera bump in place—but the bump can be carved off separately, making for some interesting DIY customization possibilities. ... and, unlike the S20 Ultra, the glass camera lenses can be individually replaced—which is probably a good thing. With the back panel removed, we can gawk at how humongous this phone looks next to our tiny Minnow Driver Kit. The 'lil guy still gets the job done—proving it's not the size of the toolkit that matters, but how you use it. The guts seem a slight iteration over last year's S20 Ultra, with minor changes to the wireless charging coil and upper antenna assemblies. The earpiece speaker comes out with the antenna assembly this go-round, which is an updated design we first saw in the Note 20—as opposed to being separately adhered to the frame in prior phones like the S20 Ultra. After we delicately yank the motherboard out, we make a beeline for the camera assemblies, where we're greeted by a familiar friend from the S20 Ultra, the 12 MP ultra-wide. Also making a reappearance is the main 108 MP ƒ/ wide-angle camera, but this year he slimmed down from a 26 to 24 mm equivalent focal length beach season is coming!. The periscope telephoto camera makes a return as well, albeit with a complete makeover, sacrificing some features in favor of others The resolution dropped from 48 MP to 10 MP; focal length increased from 103 to 240 mm going from 4x to 10x optical zoom; the sensor area shrunk 1/ to 1/ but the pixels got larger to ÎŒm; finally drumroll please, a slower aperture, from ƒ/ to ƒ/ If you absorbed all of that, we salute you. One big change to the camera array The DepthVision camera from the S20+ and Ultra has packed up and moved out, making room for a 10 MP ƒ/ 70 mm telephoto camera as the periscope's new roommate. Seems like DepthVision wasn't everything it was cracked up to be, with Samsung opting for good 'ole software processing to take care of it from now on. Also new this laser AF module, which is awesome AF at focusing. It's like a miniature golf rangefinder—perhaps you can use it as a miniature golf rangefinder? Do these boards look like howling dogs? That couldn't be more glue true as we begrudgingly pull out our isopropyl alcohol and get to work extracting the battery. Speaking of familiarity, this power pack looks awfully familiar... No wonder! It's very nearly the same battery from the S20 Ultra, with just a couple tiny updates. If you need a refresher, you're looking at a 5000 mAh power pack, running at for Wh. Last year's model ran the battery at V, for Wh. This puts the iPhone 12 Pro Max's Wh battery to shame—along with, oddly, the Note 20 Ultra's seemingly-gargantuan Wh power pack. Samsung, your product positioning, it confuse. Holy fingerprint sensor, Batman! The new in-screen sensor on the S21 Ultra right is a whopping 77% larger than the S20's now-puny-looking one. On top of software improvements, the larger surface area lets you be more lax with finger placement, while also collecting more data per scan. The S21 Ultra annoyingly skips the convenience of a modular display cable, like the one we found in the regular S21. That makes screen replacements slightly more cumbersome. We peek through a cutout and spot the display chip. We'll leave the display ungluing ceremony for a real repair guide. As seen from our X-ray shot earlier, the SIM card reader has moved from the top of the phone—where it was connected to the motherboard—to the bottom of the phone, now connected to the daughterboard, right next to the USB-C charging port. Squeezed into the corner of the frame is a new antenna, perhaps of the UWB variety? This isn't the first Samsung device with UWB, but it's the first Galaxy S phone to include the tech, which is pretty interesting. Samsung is known for pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for a smartphone, but this seems more like a maintenance year for the Galaxy series—keeping the things that worked and getting rid of the nice-tries, resulting in a refined product. With that said, the repairability of the S21 Ultra certainly hasn’t been refined from previous generations
Final Thoughts All the important fasteners are identical Phillips screws in size and length, simplifying the repair process. Many components are modular and independently replaceable, but the missing modular display cable and polycarbonate rear panel from the regular S21 are a step backward. The rear panel is glued down and difficult to remove, even more so thanks to the new ridge around the camera bump's edge. The battery and display continue to be difficult repairs, as both components are held down with some serious adhesive and require a fair bit of disassembly to get to. Repairability Score 3 Repairability 3 out of 10 10 is easiest to repair RUpzqn.
